JUST IN: Varsity workers begin nationwide indefinite strike February 5

The non – academic workers at Nigerian universities have announced plans to commence an indefinite strike on February 5 , 2021 .

The Joint Action Committee of Non -Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities made this known in a press statement.

In the statement titled, ‘ Press statement on the ongoing industrial unrest in the Nigerian university system over the lack of respect for collective bargaining agreement ’ , the workers said the strike was necessitated by the Federal Government’ s failure to yield to their demands after a three- day nationwide protests.

Part of the statement read , “ The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU had been very circumspect about embarking on a strike action . It has never been our style to undertake strike actions at the drop of a hat .

“ Sadly, it would appear that our non -belligerent modes of engagement have been taken for weakness and our belief in civil engagement and dialogue has been taken for granted. It is against this backdrop and in democratic spirit that the leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU threw back the decision after the three- day protests to the various memberships across Branches on the way forward and the resolutions have been overwhelming .

“ The resolutions across the Branches have been overwhelming and convey the disenchantment of members over the sorry state of affairs.

“ It is in line with the resolution of our members nationwide , that the leadership of the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU hereby resolve as follows – that members of NASU and SSANU shall embark on an indefinite , comprehensive and total strike with effect from midnight of Friday, 5 th February 2021 .

“ That two weeks ’ notice effective from today , Friday 22 nd January 2021 , is hereby given to Government and relevant stakeholders of this development. ”

UPDATED: Why pigeons released by Buhari didn’t fly – Adesina

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity , Femi Adesina , has given reasons why pigeons released by the president initially refused to fly during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

In an article on his Facebook Wall titled, ‘ Reflection from a wreath -laying ceremony , ’ Adesina described the pigeons ’ refused to fly as “a natural phenomenon ” .

He said , “ Now , something for those who twist my every word , turn it upside down, to generate hatred . Something for them to wail about . The release of the pigeons .

“ At every Armed Forces Remembrance Day, after the laying of the wreaths , the sitting President releases some pigeons , to symbolise peace in the land . Emblems of National harmony . It was not different last Friday.

“ The pigeons had been kept in a cage . For how long , I do not know . And when birds and some other roaming animals have been circumscribed for a while , they get accustomed to their new status as lawful captives . Therefore , when you offer them freedom , they first baulk, thinking it’ s too good to be true. It’ s a natural phenomenon .

“ President Buhari opened the cage that held the pigeons , about a score or so . One hesitated , then flew, followed by another. The others temporised a bit. And then , two , three minutes later , they all took to the sky . Nothing extraordinary in the development , you would think. ”

The president ’ s aide also faulted Nigerians for describing the refusal of the birds to fly as a “bad sign” , urging them to do something productive with their time .

He said , “But not to the idle and indolent , most of who populate the social media . It was time to major in something minor , cavil , find fault unnecessarily.
