[JUST IN] Presidency: ‘You were in school when North, South agreed on rotation’, Ohanaeze slams Kogi gov

Ohanaeze, in a statement, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, however, slammed Governor Bello, saying that he had demonstrated a remarkable obsession with ambition shortly after providence paved way for him to be sworn in as a governor in 2015 at an impressionable age of 40.

The apex Igbo body pointed out that “there is no doubt that Bello has a date with destiny going by a smooth political ascendancy that life has presented to him.”

It expressed fears that the youthful governor “is embarking on a political adventure that lacks both conscience and principle.”

“The meeting was held at the National University Commission Conference Centre, Abuja in 1998. Dr.Chuba Okadigbo spoke on behalf of the South while Alh. Abubakar Rimi spoke for the North. The likes of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Chief Solomon Lar, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, etc were at the meeting.

“The Nigerian statesmen examined the merits and demerits of zoning and rotation of power between the composite zones in Nigeria. In the end, it was resolved that the presidency be conceded to the South and that it would rotate between the South and the North in the interest of equity, unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.”

It added, “the foregoing was the basis for the emergence of presidential candidates of the mainstream political parties from the South West in1999. Since then, the patriotic and peace-loving Nigerians have adhered to the rotation principle such that at the end of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s second tenure, President Musa Yar’Adua was elected; Goodluck Jonathan and then President Muhammadu Buhari.”

UPDATE: Re-mark UTME, Tutorial centres tell JAMB

At a briefing in Bariga, Lagos, National President of the Association of Tutorial School Operators (ATSO), Mr. Dotun Shodunke described this year’s UTME as the worst, error-filled and a disgrace.

“Let me state categorically, without equivocation that the UTME 2021 is the worst conducted UTME in so many years. In fact, it is a total charade and the Association of Tutorial School Operators (ATSO) rejects it in totality. Every facet of the conduct of the UTME 2021 was marred by serious irregularities ranging from unnecessary frustration of candidates, extortion of candidates, serious glitches and malfunctions in computers and other equipment at the centres, multiple results, denying candidates the right to write the exam, subjecting candidates to danger and risks, etc. We have all the necessary evidence to back up our claims.”

“I challenge you, Sir, with your spokesperson to please get a consultant, prove to Nigerians that you did not fail these children deliberately. Get a consultant I must be there too. Get at least 20 students, their scripts print it out at least you will have the record on your server let an independent person remark. We all know the questions and answers. Let them remark if they score the same thing, I am telling the whole Nigeria, the 20 students. Please, Sir, don’t take me to court, Let me serve two years in jail,” he said, adding that if he was proven right, then the Registrar should resign.

“Candidates were getting results that belong to other people. It was so bad. Jamb had to quickly suspend that policy again. Yet we still have cases of multiple results for candidates”.

[UPDATED] Adeosun: NYSC certificate not mandatory for political office, court rules

The court stated this as it delivered judgment on the certificate scandal involving a former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.

Adeosun was embroiled in the forgery of the National Youth Service Corps certificate, which resulted in her resignation in 2018.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in his ruling on the originating summon with suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/303/21 brought by Wole Olanipekun, SAN, on her behalf, held that the NYSC certificate, based on the constitution, is not a mandatory requirement for holding a political office in the country.

“I am of the view that denying the plaintiff of the reliefs sought is not going to be doing justice to the matter,” he said.

The judge, therefore, granted all the four reliefs sought by the former minister.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that while Adeosun was the plaintiff in the suit, the Attorney-General of the Federation was the sole defendant.

JUST IN: Reps approve bill to create state police, security outfits

A Bill for an Act to provide for state police in Nigeria, has scaled second reading at the House of Representatives.

Onofiok Luke (PDP, Akwa Ibom) who sponsored the bill, said it was aimed at removing the police from exclusive list to concurrent list, towards enhancing the security of lives and property in the country.

“We have had some security challenges and some states have had to set up state security apparatus to fill in the gap,” Luke said.

This, he said, was due to an upsurge in crime following the current security challenges in the country, which appeared to have overwhelmed the police.

In his contribution, Tobi Ukechukwu (PDP, Enugu) said the creation of state police was germane to the survival of the country.

“About an hour ago, we observed a minute silence in honour of those killed in Kaduna.

“Children have been taken captive and we have had a situation in this country that ordinarily this issue of state police should have addressed,” he said.

“There is no state that does not run its own vigilance group as at now, but they are lacking the power to bear arms, arrest and prosecute.

“We cannot be pretending that everything is okay, it is not a joke that schools are closed in Kaduna,” he said.

Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, put the bill to a voice vote and it unanimously adopted and referred to the House Ad Hoc Committee on the review of 1999 Constitution.

[UPDATE] Twitter ban: ECOWAS Court fixes July 9 to consolidate suits

The ECOWAS Court stated this in a virtual court sitting held via zoom on Tuesday.

On the cause list for the day, were two applications against the Federal Government over the Twitter ban.

One was the application brought by the Registered Trustees of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project against the Federal Government marked ECW/CCJ/APP/23/21.

The ECOWAS Court stated that the parties of the other two cases, which were marked as ECW/CCJ/APP/24/21 and ECW/CCJ/APP/26/21, and sought to be consolidated were not in court.

Consequently, the court noted that it cannot make a consolidation order in their absence and without hearing from them.

The court also mentioned that the applicants in all the four applications were different but the respondents were the same.

I. C. Uzoma, a lawyer, also sought to apply to the court to intervene as an amicus curiae in the suit brought by SERAP and sought the permission of the court to move his motion since the parties in the suit he was interested in, were in court.

[JUST IN] COVID-19: England to lift mask, distancing rules July 19

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has revealed plans to lift most of England’s legal coronavirus restrictions, including face masks and social distancing from July 19, urging personal responsibility rather than government edict.

“This pandemic is far from over, it certainly won’t be over by the 19th,” warned Johnson. “We must reconcile ourselves, sadly, to more deaths from Covid.

“There’s only one reason why we can contemplate going ahead… in circumstances where we’d normally be locking down further, that’s because of the continuing effectiveness of the vaccine rollout.

“We will move away from legal restrictions and allow people to make their own informed decisions,” he said.
