[CORONAVIRUS] We are on our knees: Stay home, we’re overwhelmed, crying nurse begs people

A crying nurse is pleading with Britons to stay home and support the NHS as the pressure of the coronavirus pandemic leaves staff on their knees.

Shirley Watts, an operating theatre nurse at Basildon University Hospital, Essex, fought back tears as she tells the country how stretched staff are, as they try and stem the tide of coronavirus patients.

Teary Watts said: “We’re desperately short of staff. Things are really difficult and we’re all struggling.

“If you stay in and you don’t spread it and you don’t catch it, that takes the pressure off of us because we’re all on our knees at the moment.”

She continues: “We’re trying to save lives. We’re all just doing what we can to save people’s loved ones and I want you to see me like this because I want people to realise how serious it is.

“If you know anyone that’s going out and they don’t need to if you see groups of people, I want you to say something to them. I want you say ‘you need to stay indoors and you need to stop spreading it, you need to stop catching it’.”

Since Britain went into lockdown the public has taken part in two nationwide claps to show its appreciation for the NHS.

But this weekend’s warm weather has seen the public ignoring social distancing rules.

A tearful Shirley adds: “I know people are appreciating what we’re doing, that we’re staying away from our families and putting ourselves in danger to try and save other people’s loved ones.

“It feels like a losing battle, but it’s not because we’ve all got hope and we’re all trying to do what we can.”

Shirley was speaking after finishing a six hour shift. She told viewers she was going home to sleep before returning for another shift tonight.

UPDATED: Nigerians warn FG against inviting Chinese medics

Some Nigerians have expressed outrage over the invitation of 18 Chinese medical experts to the country to assist in the fight against the coronavirus , a microbe which causes COVID- 19 .

Observation by news correspondent showed that the Nigerians distrusted the Chinese government , hence they asked the Federal Government to be wary of bringing in the Chinese medical team, especially as they are coming from where the disease originated from .

The Chairman of the association, Dr Muhammed Adeboye, said in Ilorin that Nigeria has no alarming cases compared to other countries to warrant external help.

”It is bad for us to be expecting experts because people are not dying massively in Nigeria and cases are not increasing astronomically.

”For now, we are not stressed out as far as the crisis is concerned and people are been discharged day-in-day-out.

”So, there is no indication to bring any professional from any part of the world,” Adeboye said.

He cautioned that any external unwarranted assistance could aid the foreigners to manipulate the virus to be more harmful to Nigerians.

”Bringing people in can be an avenue for many terrible things to happen as well, because we don’t have the capacity to manipulate viruses whether confirmed or not.

”It is a novel virus which might be probably man made and to a large extent, the rate of infection here is not as much as what we have in other countries.

”They can still manipulate to want to know what it is that is working for us, then go ahead to manipulate the virus again.

”And then, they will now import the virus with the so called unwarranted assistance, before you know it more people will be dying of it.

”So, we don’t need any foreign assistance, not even from China,” the MDCAN president said.

Meanwhile, The resident doctors, however, say they have distanced themselves from the plan.

“In the interim, NARD wishes to distance herself from the planned importation of Chinese medical experts to Nigeria in whatever guise or hood for the reasons presented in this write-up and many more,” Sokomba stated.

“NARD shall not contemplate further warning to distance herself from the Chinese adventure by way of withdrawing all her members from every public health facility in Nigeria so that the anticipated downturn in the output of Nigeria’s healthcare service delivery can be properly situated and traceable to the Chinese as is the case today in Italy.

“NARD hereby reiterates her position which was canvased earlier in the week for the FG to immediately and massively employ all qualified but unemployed doctors and other healthcare workers. Get them trained, insured, motivated and deployed nationwide”.

[JUST IN] Covid-19: FG seeks NASS approval for N500bn intervention fund

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Finance has reached out to the National Assembly to intimate it with an Executive Proposal to establish a N500 billion COVID- 19 Crisis Intervention Fund .

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed , led the Federal Government’ s team and met with the Senate President , Ahmad Lawan , and Speaker of the House of Representatives , Femi Gbajabiamila , to work out the modalities.

According to a release from the Office of the Senate President , the finance minister along with senior officials from the ministry held the meeting at the National Assembly.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Senate President , Ovie Omo -Agege ; Deputy Speaker , Idris Wase , and some other principal officers from both chambers .

The meeting was a follow- up to one held last week Wednesday between the National Assembly leadership and members of the Presidential Committee which was set up for the management of the COVID – 19 crisis .

The finance minister said , “ What we are proposing is an establishment of a N500 billion COVID- 19 Crisis Intervention Fund .

“ This Fund , that we are proposing , that should be created , will involve mopping up resources from various special accounts that the government , as well as the Federation , have , to be able to pull this N500 billion .

“ Our general view is that this crisis intervention fund is to be utilised to upgrade healthcare facilities as earlier identified .

“ The Federal Government also needs to be in a position to improve health care facilities not only in the states but to provide intervention to the states .

“ We know that there will be a need for the parliament to agree and approve the taking of loans from these special accounts and we will be coming back with a proposed bill in that regard that will define what the fund will be used for . ”

The minister said that in addition to the identified special accounts from where the money would be drawn as loans, the proposed intervention fund is also expected to be sourced from grants being expected and loans from multilateral institutions.

She told the lawmakers that the Fund , if approved , would take care of special Public Work Programmes currently being implemented by the National Directorate of Employment.

In his remarks , the Senate President said the meeting was in fulfilment of an earlier promise to provide support as the need arises in this time of crisis .

Lawan said , “ Just like we told Nigerians when there is need for us to meet or to take legislative action in support of ensuring that the government responds appropriately to developments issues and challenges in the country, we will do so .

“ I think coming to us for those loans is critical because we are in an emergency and time is of the essence . So , we must work as expeditiously as possible to ensure that we place the request before the National Assembly.

“ I think the time has come for us to redefine the implementation of the Social Intervention Programme , probably going out to communities to give them N20 , 000 per person might not be the best way to go . It is still an effort , but I think we need a better approach that will be more efficient . ”
