JUST IN: Worship centres to reopen in Lagos June 19 – Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu of Lagos State says worship centres in the state will be allowed to reopen , according to reports .

The governor stated this during a briefing at the Government House, Marina .

He said mosques are to reopen from June 19 while churches are to begin services from June 21 .

He said hotels are allowed to reopen while gyms, night clubs , and cinemas would still remain closed , adding that the decision to reopen them would be reviewed in the next two weeks .

Sanwo- Olu said , “ There will now be restricted openings of religious houses based on compliance that we have seen and reviewed with the Safety Commission .

“ From 14 days time , precisely on the 19 th of June for our Muslim worshippers and from the 21 st of June for our Christian worshippers , we will be allowing all of our religious bodies to open at a maximum of 40 % of their capacity and we ’ ll be working with them as being expected by the Lagos State Safety Commission .

“ But we know that these places of worship have different sizes but even if your 40 % capacity is really so large , you cannot have beyond 500 worshippers at once , and keeping that maximum 40 % capacity is really important.

“ We will be encouraging people to have more than one service and ensure that they keep their premises clean, disinfect before another round of worship can take place .

“ We will also be advising that there should only be mandatory Fridays and Sunday services. All other night vigils and services must be put on hold for now until we review our current situation.

“ We will also be advising very strongly that persons below the age of 15 because of how well they walk around and difficult to hold down should be excused from the places of worship and citizens that are above the age of 65 should not be allowed into these places of worship .

“ We will also advise that there should be no food sharing and communion from a common dish should be discouraged during this period .

WHO to resume chloroquine coronavirus clinical trials

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that clinical trials of the drug hydroxychloroquine will resume as it searches for potential coronavirus treatments.

On May 25, the WHO announced it had temporarily suspended the trials to conduct a safety review, which has now concluded there is “no reason” to change the way the trials are conducted.

The UN health agency’s decision came after a study published in The Lancet medical journal suggesting the drug could increase the risk of death among COVID-19 patients.

The executive group of the so-called Solidarity Trial — in which hundreds of hospitals across the world have enrolled patients to test several possible treatments for the novel coronavirus — took the decision as a precaution.

Hydroxychloroquine is normally used to treat arthritis but public figures including US President Donald Trump have backed the drug for COVID-19 prevention and treatment, prompting governments to bulk-buy.

“Last week, the executive group of the Solidarity Trial decided to implement a temporary pause of the hydroxychloroquine arm of the trial, because of concerns raised about the safety of the drug,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news briefing.

“This decision was taken as a precaution while the safety data were reviewed.

“The data safety and monitoring committee of the Solidarity Trial has been reviewing the data.

“On the basis of the available mortality data, the members of the committee recommended that there are no reasons to modify the trial protocol.

“The executive group received this recommendation and endorsed continuation of all arms of the Solidarity Trial, including hydroxychloroquine.

“The executive group will communicate with the principal investigators in the trial about resuming the hydroxychloroquine arm of the trial.

“The data safety and monitoring committee will continue to closely monitor the safety of all therapeutics being tested in the Solidarity Trial.”

More than 3,500 patients have been recruited across 35 countries to take part in the trials.

TRAGICOMEDY: Security agents, NNPC asleep as pipeline vandals steal N16.5m fuel in Lagos

Residents of Fagba community, in the Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos State , have lost their peace over the activities of pipeline vandals in the area .

Done , they released the guard and left the area without a trace.

At the rate of N 125 per litre, the pump price fuel was being sold at the time , a 33 , 000 litre tanker would cost N4 , 125 , 000 . The four tankers would therefore cost N16 . 5 m .

Findings by news correspondent revealed that some members of the group had visited the site a few days earlier to prepare for the operation .

A resident , who spoke on condition of anonymity , said the vandals dug a hole at the point where they intended to siphon the fuel.

“ A guard on the adjoining street saw them digging in the wee hours of the night and flashed a torch in their direction . He asked what they were doing and they told him not to bother himself because they worked for some powerful people.

“ The guard said towards the end of his chat with them, they asked for his phone number and account details , that they could send something to him as well. A gate separated him from those people , so they did not have contact , ” he said .

A former executive member of the mechanic union told newsmen that when he arrived at the workshop in the morning , he noticed the hole around the pipeline.

He said he quickly mobilised other mechanics to tow a van to the spot , to frustrate the plot of the vandals .

“ We removed the four tyres of the vehicle we towed to the spot . We also alerted the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officer in charge of Ifako Ijaiye , Mrs. Osho; and one Mr Dare , who works with a private company guarding the pipeline. Buhari to decide on worship centres’ reopening today – PTF

The Presidential Task Force on COVID- 19 on Sunday met with the President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd . ) , and discussed the next phase of reopening of sectors in the country.

The PTF Chairman , Boss Mustapha , said one of the recommendations submitted to Buhari was that Nigeria would enter the second phase of the battle against the pandemic.

Mustapha , while briefing journalists after the meeting at the Presidential Villa , said the task force had made recommendations to the President .

According to him , states should now manage the pandemic , with coordination by the Federal Government.

Mustapha , while responding to a question on states reopening worship centres , said the issue was discussed at the meeting .

He said , “ That is part of what we have considered in its totality . We await Mr President ’ s decision on that . Once I receive his approval, going forward , as to certain recommendations that we have put in place, we will see how that happens .

“ I can assure you of one thing : the ownership of the next phase will be the responsibility of the states under national supervision and coordination, because we have gone into community transmission . Where are the communities ? The communities are in the states .

“ So , the ownership of the next phase will be that of the states , the local governments , the traditional institutions, the religious leaders at the different levels of our communities . That is where the problem is . ”

The SGF also said the PTF had reviewed the issues of places of worship , schools , and businesses , saying “ we have made the appropriate recommendations . ”

He added , “ But you know that Mr President is the only one that can take decisions in respect of that . In the framework , the states are sub -nationals ; they have their own responsibilities too . So , it is in the exercise of those responsibilities that they met with religious bodies and agreed on the protocols and guidelines on how to open up . But in the framework of the national response , we are taking that into consideration . ”

When asked if the economy would be opened soon, the PTF chairman said , “ After we receive the approval of Mr President tonight or tomorrow ( Monday ) morning , we will now know which ( other ) segment of the economy is allowed to open . ”
