JUST IN: ASUP vows to continue nationwide strike

The ASUP National President, Mr Anderson Ezeibe, made the union’s position known at an emergency congress held at the Federal polytechnic, Auchi in Edo.

“Our members should continue to believe in the union the way they have been doing, we have very supportive members as you can see; the strike is in full swing.

“Every polytechnic is observing the strike and compliance level is very high, we will continue to persevere, victory is around the corner,’’ he said.

“It is true that the government has started doing something.

“The one that has been done is the issue of governing councils that have been reconstituted and the visitation panels that have been set up.

“Offers have been made for the payment of arrears of minimum wage and the N15 billion infrastructure revitalisation fund; they are still at the level of offer because the funds have not been released.

“We want to see the funds released for the sector and we want to see some other items that require processes to be put in motion.

“If we are able to get to that point, I am sure our national executive committee will take a second look at the strike,’’ he said.

Registration: JAMB introduces USSD code,  commence from April 30

The Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this during a news briefing at the board’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, on Monday.

Oloyede said the use of the USSD code would commence from Friday, April 30.

” Parents are being extorted when sending requests unsuccessfully and at the end, nothing comes or is delayed by the network, and yet, N50 is being charged and deducted.

” You must note that these charges do not come to JAMB but to the service providers.

” Therefore, we have asked all those concerned to go back and ensure that where a service is not fully rendered and charges were deducted, such monies should be refunded to the candidates.

” JAMB does not have the capacity to enforce this refund or monitor compliance but we are expanding our stakeholders to include Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to do it.

” They will join our task force to check on any act of extortion, while we also invite Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to monitor and check on these service providers.

” Another option we are creating asides sending an SMS to 55019 to generate a profile code will include dialing *55019*1*NIN#.

” This will, however, take effect from Friday, April 30,” he said.

JUST IN: Polytechnic lecturers begin indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has commenced an indefinite strike with effect from today.

The union said this followed the failure of the government to address the sorry state of polytechnics and monotechnics and the expiration of the ultimatum issued since March 2020.

The action is coming less than a week after resident doctors embarked on a nationwide strike over non-payment of allowances and other issues.

Announcing this at a press briefing in Abuja, the ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, said academic activities had been shut shown in all polytechnics and like institutions nationwide with effect from 12am, April 6.

According to him, the union’s demands were communicated to the ministries of education, labour and others as well as to state governors but nothing was done about them.

He said, “Our grievances also include the non-reconstitution of governing councils in federal polytechnics and many state-owned institutions leading to the disruption of governance and administrative processes in the institutions since May, 2020.

“This has also undermined the renegotiation of the union’s 2010 agreement with the government which was unilaterally suspended by the government for over two years now.”

Ekiti to Teachers: Resign if you can’t work in rural areas

SUBEB lamented the lopsidedness created over the refusal of teachers to go to rural areas

thereby concentrating them in the cities at the expense of rural schools, saying the board would undertake a redistribution policy to correct the imbalance.

The SUBEB Chairman, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, said this in Ikogosi, Ekiti West Local government area, while flagging off a five-day training programme for primary schools’ Quality Assurance Officers held at the Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort Centre.

“We don’t have teachers in local areas while they are in surplus in our cities, particularly Ado Ekiti. This lopsidedness is a major problem and we have to embark on teachers’ redistribution. If we don’t use a radical approach, we won’t go far.

“We have teachers that are sufficient in primary schools, but the question to ask is, have those teachers in the villages committed a crime?

“The new policy now is, is either they honour the postings we are going to do or they tender their resignation. Some believe they can influence, but in this exercise, we are going to transfer those who thought they are untouchable”.
